POV: Director

How would you describe what you do?
I try to communicate values and emotion through art - an audiovisual experience.
My personal interests are: social advertisement, fiction, documentaries and music videos.
How did you get into this job?
I have started from sound. While I was studying Acoustics at a Technical University, a friend of mine let me know about some film school students who were directing a short fiction film. I went to the set and sunk in. It was an amazing experience!!! The film won many prizes in Poland and went to Sundance. I started to write screenplays, direct, edit, shoot. I went to film school with a couple of short movies done. I started my company soul seed media and for over 10 years I'm in the film business ;-).
What is most challenging about what you do?
The white page. Starting all over again from nothing, where everything is possible ;-). Also, constant imagination and creative problem solving on set and throughout the whole production. Being aware and focused for over 16 hours a day ;-).
What is most rewarding?
Meeting amazing people and teamwork - getting the best of very talented people around me ;-). Getting into places which normal people wouldn't see in their whole life. And the most important - the possibility to have the impact on the world to make it a better place!
What’s a typical work week like?
Meeting client. Brainstorming. Watching films. Screenwriting. Life on set. Editing. CC & sound postproduction. Delivery. Time to rest and enjoy the finished work ;-).
What needs to happen the most in order for a shoot to run smoothly?
Perfect preparation. Pre-visualisation of the idea in the most detailed way. Meeting actors before shooting, making rehearsals. Very good set documentation, including electric sockets, light, framing and test shooting. Editing a pre-cinematic version of the film. Great, tested crew. Client on set consulting every shot. Being consequent and time-aware ;-)
Whats your best job/worst job?
Best job so far - last social campaign spot - "Christmas Eve Without Borders" - perfect preparation, great crew & actors, very quick postproduction. Every step consulted thoroughly with the client. Everyone stating that it was their best film experience ever. Great success ;-)!

Worst job - there is no such thing, everything might be fixed, rethinked and restarted. Even hard to work with people are possible to change through simple honest conversation ;-).
What advice would you offer someone considering a career as a Director?
Have a passion - it will guide you through MANY problems you will encounter. Be tough, stubborn and brave. Success will come. Be faithful to your vision, fight for it - don't even try to copy others there is no use to fall in the same drawer with millions of people. Uniqueness is your power ;-)!
If you had one project that you could post on AdForum to represent your work, what would it be?
Already posted - a music video "Fisheclectic - Close". A young girl gets into an attic to solve its mystery. Beautiful music and cinematography.
Finally tell us something that most people don’t know about being a Director?
It takes en enormous amount of perseverance and faith. Struggling with time, money, people, self limits. Staying focused for hours. But it's probably the best job in the world. Creating new worlds. Meeting amazing people and teamwork - sharing the potential of the most talented people around you. Getting into places which normal people wouldn't see in their whole life. And the most important - the possibility to have the impact on the world to make it a better place ;-)!
